HARGEYSA โ The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, is expected to travel to Washington in the coming days for his first visit to the United States since taking office. The visit comes as Somaliland intensifies its diplomatic efforts to secure broader international recognition and could represent an important new step in Hargeisaโs engagement with the United States.
The planned visit comes several months after Israel officially recognized Somaliland as an independent state in December 2025, becoming the first UN member state to take such a step. Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991 and has since operated with its own government institutions and political system, although it remains largely unrecognized by the international community.
Israelโs recognition opened a new chapter in relations between the two sides and was followed by a rapid diplomatic rapprochement. In June 2026, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi made a historic visit to Israel, where he was received by President Isaac Herzog and Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana. Somaliland has also inaugurated an embassy in Jerusalem, further highlighting the growing diplomatic relationship between Hargeisa and Jerusalem.
The question of possible American recognition of Somaliland, however, remains open. Following Israelโs decision, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that Washington was not yet ready to take such a step and that the administration wanted to study the matter first. The Somaliland presidentโs expected visit to Washington could therefore provide Hargeisa with an opportunity to present its arguments directly to the American administration and strengthen its case for recognition.
Somaliland is of particular strategic interest to the United States because of its location in the Horn of Africa, near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the major maritime shipping routes of the Red Sea. The territoryโs proximity to this strategically important maritime chokepoint has increased its geopolitical significance, particularly amid growing security challenges in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Israel and Somaliland have already expressed their willingness to expand cooperation in several areas, including security, agriculture, water management, healthcare, technology, and the economy. Against this backdrop, the Somaliland presidentโs expected visit to Washington could become an important diplomatic opportunity for Hargeisa to strengthen its relationship with the United States and advance its long-standing campaign for international recognition.
