HARGEISA, Somaliland |August 23, 2026: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland, through its Maritime Security Coordination Office, today opened a two-day strategic consultative meeting focused on emerging security challenges in the Red Sea and strengthening regional maritime coordination.


The meeting aims to assess recent developments in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden and explore mechanisms for improving coordination between government institutions and private-sector stakeholders involved in maritime security. Participants are also examining measures to mitigate the potential impact of the regional crises on Somalilandโ€™s maritime security, trade, and economic interests.


Opening the meeting, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Abdirahman Hassan said the discussions would focus on analyzing the latest developments in the Red Sea and assessing their potential implications for Somaliland across multiple sectors.


He emphasized the importance of evaluating the countryโ€™s existing capabilities and infrastructure and determining how effectively they can contribute to Somalilandโ€™s resilience in the face of emerging regional challenges.


The Director General noted that the current instability affecting international maritime routes could have significant consequences for Somalilandโ€™s security, trade, and economy, making maritime security a particularly important national priority.


Also addressing the meeting, Director of the Maritime Security Coordination Office Mohamed Aden Sheikh โ€œTukaaleโ€ said the consultation would contribute to a deeper understanding of the challenges emerging in the Red Sea and help generate diverse ideas on how Somaliland can prepare for and mitigate their potential consequences.


He urged participants to engage in in-depth analysis of the evolving regional situation and develop practical approaches to strengthening the countryโ€™s maritime security preparedness.


Irek, representing EUCAP, also spoke at the forum, highlighting the importance of discussing the emerging regional crises and their potential impact on Somalilandโ€™s maritime routes and the country as a whole.


The meeting brings together representatives from various government institutions responsible for maritime security, private-sector organizations, maritime security experts, academics, representatives from several universities, officials from DP World, and other key stakeholders.


Over the course of the two-day meeting, participants will examine the evolving security environment in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways and identify practical measures to enhance Somalilandโ€™s national preparedness.


The consultation is expected to produce actionable recommendations aimed at strengthening coordination among relevant institutions, assessing existing national capabilities and infrastructure, and improving Somalilandโ€™s resilience against emerging risks to maritime security, trade, and the wider economy.


The meeting comes amid growing concerns over security and instability affecting strategic international maritime routes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, waterways that are critical to regional and global trade.
